Early Treatment

When is the best time to begin orthodontic treatment?

Though an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, there is often an optimal time to begin treatment.

As specialists in growth and development and experienced orthodontists, Dr. Bird and Dr. Spencer are able to detect any deficiencies in the growth cycle and understand the profound benefits of early intervention. That’s why we want to see your child early!  The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at age seven. However, at our office we prefer to see them even younger – as early as age 3.  This is because the most rapid growth of the upper and lower jaws occurs BEFORE age 7!

Our goal is to provide interceptive therapy, when possible, to make sure that growth is happening to its fullest potential. Early intervention allows us to capitalize on the child’s growth, thereby requiring less invasive techniques.  If the upper jaw does not grow as far forward as it should it can “trap” the lower jaw and hold the entire midface back.  This directly impacts the size of the upper airway.  Since the roof of the mouth is also the floor of the nose, a narrow upper jaw also means that the patient has a narrow nasal cavity.  Timely screening increases the chances for a healthy airway and an incredible smile.

At these early ages, depending on the nature of the problem, and the behavior of the child, we have options! We often do fixed upper and lower expander appliances with or without fixed braces.  If looking for a removable option, we offer Guide appliances worn primarily at night, Invisalign®  First for kids and Invisalign® Palatal Expander!

No more goop, gagging, or discomfort. Using an iTero® scanner we can take a highly accurate digital impression to make our appliances!

Did you know that Dr. Bird is also a pediatric dentist?  As a child’s oral health expert, she knows what to look for in terms of best time to treat, cooperation needed to treat, pros and cons of early treatment and if early treatment is really going to help long term.
