Emergencies
Sometimes problems happen…we are here for you! Please call us at Braces by Bird Phone Number (704) 544-5001 to get advice on how to fix it or to schedule a repair appointment! Remember, often a little bit of wax can go a long way in making a poking situation feel better until you can be seen!
What are the Most Likely Orthodontic Emergencies?
There are really no TRUE emergencies that arise from orthodontic care. However, please be aware of the following scenarios that could arise!
1. Soreness and Discomfort in the Teeth
You may feel some discomfort or soreness in your teeth after an adjustment session. This is normal and usually lasts a few days. Over-the-counter pain medications can help lessen the pain.
2. Ulcers or Sores
Braces can sometimes be bothersome, especially when they rub against your cheeks or lips and cause a sore. Applying orthodontic wax to the troublesome area may provide pain reduction. Peroxyl is a great over-the-counter mouthwash that can help heal cuts quickly!
3. Poking Out Braces Wires
You might feel severe discomfort if you’re dealing with a pesky broken bracket or wire. Simply cover the sharp end with some orthodontic wax, and you will be able to go about your day without any pain or irritation.
4. Food Stuck in Braces
It is not only unpleasant, but it can also lead to significant consequences if left ignored. Using a toothbrush, interdental ‘Christmas tree brush’, or a water flosser (we like Philips’ Sonicare brand!) to remove food can be pretty beneficial. Take a few additional minutes to clean your braces correctly.
5. Loose Braces (Brackets), Bands or Wires
Loose braces, bands or wires are not a true emergency and can be easily fixed at your next orthodontic appointment. Multiple instances of broken brackets can lengthen your time in braces, so remember to be careful with foods you choose – avoid sticky or too crunchy!
6. Broken Retainer
When your retainers break, your teeth may begin to move back into their original position, ruining our hard work! Please call us as soon as possible to schedule a repair appointment!
7. Missing Colored Ties
Elastic ligatures are critical to secure the wire. Missing rubber bands can affect the effectiveness of your braces but are not a true emergency. Let us know at your next orthodontic appointment!
8. Poking Wire
The wire of your braces may shift and poke out the back. Covering the sharp point with orthodontic wax might give temporary comfort from this orthodontic emergency until you can make an appointment!
9. Swallowed Piece of the Appliance
Act swiftly if you accidentally swallow a piece of your orthodontic appliance. This is an uncommon but significant medical emergency that could require rapid medical intervention. Don’t put off contacting us or seeking emergency medical care.
